How is the information used?
We use your information for the following purposes:
- to respond to and deliver your requests for products, services or information;
- to send you messages informing you about your scheduled upcoming events;
- to improve products and services and better understand your needs, including through customer surveys;
- to improve our websites and offerings based on the information and feedback we receive from you;
- to increase your awareness of FM branded products and services;
- to provide your contact information to individuals with whom there is a mutual match;
- to include you in advertising, marketing or promotional campaigns and to inform you of offers for products, services or events that we believe are of interest to you and which are offered by FM, its affiliates, related companies and partners;
- if we become involved in a transaction to sell parts of our business or assets or merge with other businesses, as customer information may be part of such transactions, we may use or disclose this information to other parties involved in the transaction; and
- if you attend an event co-branded and sponsored by a third party, we may share your personal information with them for purposes of facilitating that event.
With whom is the information shared?
In addition to the uses set out above, we may need to disclose some of your personal information to our service providers who help us deliver and improve our services to you. We may also release your information when we believe release is permitted by or appropriate to comply with the law (for example, in response to a search warrant or other legally valid inquiry or order, or to an investigative body in the case of a breach of an agreement or contravention of law), to enforce our Website policies, to exercise or a defend legal claims or to protect ours or others rights, property, or safety. We may also provide non-personally identifiable website visitor information may be provided to other parties for marketing, advertising, or other uses.
Collection by third parties
Security and storage
Your personal information, including any information collected in the database of the FM websites is to be stored at secure locations and on servers controlled by FM in Canada. It may also be stored at the offices of our service providers. In some cases personal information may be disclosed, processed and stored outside Canada, and therefore may be available to government authorities under lawful orders and laws applicable there. Any electronic records generated during the course of transactions with us will be maintained on those servers. You may obtain information and address questions about the privacy policies and practices relating to handling of your personal information outside of Canada by contacting our Privacy Officer at any of the addresses set out below under “Privacy Officer”. We retain your personal information as long as is required for the purposes identified when you provided the personal information and for any new purposes identified and consented to by you, and for an appropriate time thereafter.
We have policies and procedures in place to protect your personal information from loss, unauthorized access, modification or disclosure. In addition, we have implemented technological safeguards including security software, passwords and firewalls intended to prevent unauthorized computer access. We have taken preventive measures to restrict access to personal information, as well as to detect and prohibit certain connections and operations by unauthorized users. No claim is made as to the impenetrability of the system under unusual circumstance or its resilience to future attacks.
We may place on such computer information and code (including text files called “cookies”) for later retrieval. The information and code are collected and used for the purpose of providing products and services, evaluating, and improving, use of the FM websites, and otherwise operating our business, and enable the FM websites to recognize you as a prior user, provide the FM websites with information regarding your prior use, and assist FM in determining what portions of the FM websites are most appropriate for you. We use so-called permanent cookies which will be saved on your browser for an extended period of time, unless you delete them sooner, and so-called session cookies which will be deleted when your browser is closed. Your web browser may provide you with the ability to not accept cookies. However, in order to take full advantage of the FM websites, we recommend that you accept cookies.
Since we may use your information to provide services to you, it is important that the information be accurate and up to date. Please inform us if any of your information changes so that we can make any necessary changes.
How do I make inquiries about my personal information?
You may ask for access to any information that we hold about you and request that it be updated. You also may ask how we collected the information, how we are using it, and to whom we have disclosed it. Your request for access must be in writing, and should be sent to our Privacy Officer at the addresses listed below.
In certain circumstances we may be unable to provide access to some or all of the information that we hold about you. If we are unable or not permitted by law to provide you with access, we will provide you with an explanation and indicate further steps which are available to you.
FM has a Privacy Officer who is available to fulfil your personal information requests and is responsible for our compliance with applicable privacy laws.
